Masters in Geographic Information Science New Zealand

The interactive map was designed to illustrate the vulnerability of the world to changes in access to food provided by the global food system, such as natural disasters or political embargoes. Data from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations has been used to show trade between countries. The map represents an interactive version of the FAO data, providing the ability to visualise the most significant impacts of removing one country from the global food system. The thickness of trade routes represent the quantity of trade flow,This site was designed and created by 6 students of the Masters in GIS programme in New Zealand, as part of a project for a course.

Zooming on the map can be performed through the click wheel of your mouse, or through the zoom controls at the top left of the map. Panning may be performed by clicking a point on the map and dragging in the desired direction to change the view extent. Countries can be selected through a single click over the country of interest, which will be accompanied by a popup containing the relevant data. To illustrate the change in trade networks, once a country is selected it may be removed from the trade network by pressing the remove country button. This country will be added the list visible beside the map. Once you have selected the countries you wish to remove and have added them to the list, press the reset button to reset the Map window to acknowledge the changes in trade.
